XMPP Summit coming soon to a FOSDEM near you!

As you’ll be aware if you’ve been following the XSF’s mailing lists and chatrooms, FOSDEM 2012 is coming, and that means it’s also time for the XMPP Summit 11.

A rough timetable is:

Friday 3rd February – XSF Interop Day (Hosted by Cisco in Diegem)

The testing to be done is being organized as I type on our mailing list at interop@xmpp.org

Saturday 4th February – XMPP Realtime Lounge at FOSDEM, XMPP Talks at FOSDEM

If you’ve some fun project to demo at our stand, the Realtime Lounge, or an exciting talk about XMPP and related topics, we still have speaking slots available – tell us your idea on the summit@xmpp.org mailing list. Talks start at 11:00, and run through to 19:00.

Sunday 5th February – XMPP Realtime Lounge at FOSDEM

More demos of unusual and inventive uses of XMPP throughout the day at the Realtime Lounge.

Monday 6th February – XMPP Summit 11 (Hosted by Cisco at Diegem)

Technical talks and discussion for the participants of the standards@xmpp.org mailing list.

All this, and evening entertainment too – on Friday, there’s the FOSDEM Beer Event (Look for the XSF logo projected onto the ceiling to find us there!), and on Saturday, we’ll have the XSF Dinner – free to XSF Members, and sponsors are always welcome – and very popular on the night!

If you’re coming, join the summit@xmpp.org mailing list and make yourself known – we’re busy organizing hotel deals, speakers, demos, and so on there, so you’ll be able to get the best deals we can wangle and be ahead of the game.

Microsoft Adds XMPP Support to Windows Live APIs

Microsoft has announced that it is adding support for XMPP to its Windows Live APIs, enabling any application or IM network to interoperate with Windows Live Messenger. Details are available at liveside.net and dev.live.com.

Serving on the Board or Council

Each year the members of the XSF choose new people to provide technical leadership on the XMPP Council and business leadership on the XSF Board of Directors. These roles typically require only a few hours a week over the one-year term, and are a great way to get involved in the XMPP community. If you’re interested in volunteering or know someone else who might be, visit the wiki page or ask one of the current Board or Council members for insights.

Skype Adds XMPP Support

Skype has added support for XMPP to its latest Windows beta, according to Phil Wolff of Skype Journal. Janko Roettgers provides further analysis at GigaOM. This is yet another demonstration of the power of open standards.

Google: “The Future is Jingle”

Jingle (XEP-0166 and XEP-0167) is the voice and media signalling protocol developed by Google, Collabora, Yate, Tandberg and Jabber Inc (the latter two now part of Cisco), and standardized within the XSF.

Seen by many as key for an open-standard consumer VOIP system to compete with Skype and others, the specifications moved from Experimental to Draft status two years ago, and have been implemented in a large number of clients, including desktop and mobile handset environments.

Google’s original VOIP protocol, as used in Google Talk, was an important precursor to Jingle, and Google has now announced a switchover to Jingle as their “primary signalling protocol” for voice calls “to and from Gmail, iGoogle, and Orkut.”

Kevin Smith, XMPP Council Chair, who was also Chair when Jingle was advanced to Draft, said of the announcement:

“Google’s updates to use the standardised Jingle protocols will mean an increased chance of interoperability for streaming audio between XMPP users and will hopefully entice more developers into producing implementations and contributing to the standards process.”

Peter Thatcher of Google said in his announcement to the Jingle developers list that “the future is Jingle,” and went on

“I hope that this will be a support to the Jingle community and futher our efforts to have open standards for voice and video communication.”

Last Call on Jingle Audio Codecs

The XSF has issued a Last Call on XEP-0262, which describes implementation considerations related to audio codecs for use in Jingle RTP sessions, and recommends PCMU and PCMA (G.711) as mandatory-to-implement technologies to provide a baseline for interoperability. If you have feedback, please post to the jingle@xmpp.org or standards@xmpp.org discussion list before July 8, 2011.

Jingle ZRTP Spec Advances

Earlier today, the XSF advanced XEP-0262 from Experimental to Draft in our standards process. This specification defines how to use ZRTP with Jingle for end-to-end encryption of audio and video sessions, thus supplementing the existing SRTP method defined in XEP-0167. Special thanks to the Jitsi team for providing implementation feedback.
