BrowserID, meet XMPP.

Identity and Privacy are a growing concern on the Internet nowadays, and there have been different attempts to solve this.

One of the most recent ones is BrowserID. The XSF believes however, that building upon the strengths of XMPP would be a great way forward for the BrowserID concept, due to its inherent federation, proven Internet-wide scalability, and decentralised architecture.

This is why the XSF has decided to support projects that demonstrate the use of XMPP for BrowserID purposes. In order to do this, the first step is to get a Request for Proposals designed, so that the XSF can establish criteria to decide which projects to support financially.

We’ll have an initial open discussion tomorrow:

XMPP WG Session at IETF 83

The IETF’s XMPP Working Group will hold an in-person meeting this week at IETF 83 in Paris. The topics will include end-to-end encryption, server-to-server federation, and internationalization. Remote access will also be accommodated. Here are the particulars:

We’re happy to announce that the XSF has been accepted to participate in the Google Summer of Code for 2012. See our wiki page for details. We still have time to add project ideas to the list there, so if you participate in an XMPP-related codebase feel free to get involved!

FOSDEM 2012 Report

On February 3-6, the XSF and members of the XMPP community participated in both XMPP Summit 11 and FOSDEM 2012 in Brussels, Belgium. This is a late report about the activities there, based on the notes made at the time about the Summit and FOSDEM in general.

With regard to community outreach, we had a very successful presence at FOSDEM. In addition to the devroom, where we brought together a full afternoon of talks about XMPP and related topics, we also hosted a “real-time lounge” in one of the buildings on the ULB campus.

As you can see, this approach was much more interactive than a table in a hallway: we held technology demonstrations, people were able to mingle more naturally and do some side-by-side coding, we showed a real-time microblogging feed on the wall, and we even patched in an encrypted video feed from the devroom using the Jitsi client. We also learned some valuable lessons about logistics and last-minute shopping at IKEA for things like tables and rugs. Let’s hope the FOSDEM organizers allow us to repeat the experiment next year!

On Friday and Monday we met at the Cisco office near the Brussels airport for technical discussions. The big focus this year was on finding better ways to integrate XMPP and the World Wide Web, from defining XMPP over WebSocket to using XMPP accounts as sources for authentication credentials in BrowserID. Various members of the XMPP community will be working on those initiatives in the coming months.

The FOSDEM weekend is always a lot of work to pull off, but it’s worth it. Special thanks this year go to Florian Jensen of Flosoft for his local knowledge and assistance, to Dave Cridland and the rest of the Isode team for lugging those t-shirts and hoodies around, and to Jerome Paquay of Cisco for finding space for us to store all the stuff we bought at IKEA. XMPP Summit coming soon to a FOSDEM near you!

As you’ll be aware if you’ve been following the XSF’s mailing lists and chatrooms, FOSDEM 2012 is coming, and that means it’s also time for the XMPP Summit 11.

A rough timetable is:

Friday 3rd February – XSF Interop Day (Hosted by Cisco in Diegem)

The testing to be done is being organized as I type on our mailing list at interop@xmpp.org

Saturday 4th February – XMPP Realtime Lounge at FOSDEM, XMPP Talks at FOSDEM

If you’ve some fun project to demo at our stand, the Realtime Lounge, or an exciting talk about XMPP and related topics, we still have speaking slots available – tell us your idea on the summit@xmpp.org mailing list. Talks start at 11:00, and run through to 19:00.

Sunday 5th February – XMPP Realtime Lounge at FOSDEM

More demos of unusual and inventive uses of XMPP throughout the day at the Realtime Lounge.

Monday 6th February – XMPP Summit 11 (Hosted by Cisco at Diegem)

Technical talks and discussion for the participants of the standards@xmpp.org mailing list.

All this, and evening entertainment too – on Friday, there’s the FOSDEM Beer Event (Look for the XSF logo projected onto the ceiling to find us there!), and on Saturday, we’ll have the XSF Dinner – free to XSF Members, and sponsors are always welcome – and very popular on the night!

Microsoft Adds XMPP Support to Windows Live APIs

Microsoft has announced that it is adding support for XMPP to its Windows Live APIs, enabling any application or IM network to interoperate with Windows Live Messenger. Details are available at liveside.net and dev.live.com.

Serving on the Board or Council

Each year the members of the XSF choose new people to provide technical leadership on the XMPP Council and business leadership on the XSF Board of Directors. These roles typically require only a few hours a week over the one-year term, and are a great way to get involved in the XMPP community.
